FYI, I'm writing this review after eating chinese food in San Francisco for the last 15 years so know that I'm a little spoiled. That said, in my humble opinion the food was ok. The service is prompt, the food was edible and reasonably priced. The place was clean enough and functional. If you go in with the expectation of "chinese restaurant in the middle of Montana", you won't be disappointed. We had the seaweed seafood soup. The soup base was basically chicken broth with soy sauce and the seafood was minimal. I really don't recommend it. Next we had the trout which I recommend even though there was more bell pepper and onion than fish (come on, you can't have it all- you're in Montana!) Be careful, they'll charge you for rice and tip without telling you, but given the other options, I'll go back.

Food was okay. Waiter sent out wrong order and bus boy fixed. The waiter seemed upset that we ordered pot stickers. The rest of the staff was nice and friendly so maybe he was having a bad day. There was another Chinese food place down the street and this place was actually better.

I was excited because many Chinese people were eating at this restaurant. I observed what they were ordering and order the same. My husband had the "fresh" shrimp and spinach. The so called fresh shrimp was right out of the jumbo frozen bag from Sam's club. I had the Mongolian Beef. Where,s the beef? It was loaded with way too many cheap white onions. My kids had the lemon chicken. The chicken was also straight from the Sam's club bulk chicken patti bag and chopped up. Awful It was dirty. There were flies everywhere. I could visibly see kitchen help eating while cooking. Do not go here

I'm a Chinese and I feel satisfied with the lunch here. Although it's Americanized Chinese food, still it is Chinese food, which is so different from other food. This is all I want during a long trip, since I cannot stand eating american/italian food all the time. Big cities are the places to go for fine dining. In a small Montana town, I don't want to ask for too much. The annoying part is gratuity. They were really trying to cheat us by adding their mandatory 18% tips to the tax part and leaving tips part empty. We were about to calculate tips, then I noticed the extremely high "tax". Shame on them.

  • Andrew H.

Awesome food. Kind of a hole in the wall but we had the Montana Elk and I'm not sure you could get any better.

    (4)
  • Kat W.

It's a typical Americanized Chinese place. Pretty decent considering they have a monopoly of Asian cuisine in town. Not as bad as other reviewers make it out to be- they need to lighten up.

    (3)
  • Yu Z.

Bad food, worse service! It's the only chinese restaurant in west yellowstone. I really don't recommend unless you only eat chinese food. Be careful they will charge your tip without telling you.

    (1)
  • Mary W.

Not a lot of options in West Yellowstone...That being said, this was basic Chinese food. Good quality, tasty, even if Americanized. Good service. The only less than favorable thing would be the booth seats are awful!

    (3)
  • Bob L.

The food was good but the apple juice was disgusting. Luckily the service was quick but there were only about 10 tables. And plus you will probably have to wait before you eat. There was nothing great about this restaurant so you should go somewhere better.

    (2)
  • Elly G.

I was glad that there is a chinese restaurant in West Yellowstone, Mt. Its actually the only chinese restaurant. We ordered the montana elk, fish fillet dish, mongolian beef and spinach with shrimp. They were all excellent. However, the mongolian beef had too much onion in it. The y also include the tip in their final bill. Its good that we asked or we would have left another 15% tip. The service is also fast and good.

    (4)
  • Yuxiang Z.

i make much better chinese food than them

    (1)
  • Sheri G.

this place had pretty decent food. After eating at the Red Lotus, they didn't have to up their game much to be an improvement. I will say that their mongolian beef was pretty good. It had black pepper instead of the hot red peppers I"m used to, but it was good quality. The chow mein was ok. It had a weird aftertaste which I think might be the pan they cook it in. the waiter was pretty irritated we wanted to order potstickers. He seemed ticked off, never made eye contact and never smiled. He definitely was not interested in us. He never brought me my soda, had to get the busboy to get it, when he brought our meal, he brought my husband the wrong dish. We wanted to tell him, but he set it on the table and left so quickly we never had a chance. We finally found someone else to help us. We eventually did receive the right entree, for which we got no apology for their error. The female waitress was kind, and seemed to really be nice to customers. I suggest you make sure you sit in her section. We were on vacation with other people who ate their the night before and had the same crappy waiter. He is just rude to people. I don't think it was isolated to us. I would say the dining experience was ok. I probably would eat there again if I was tired of burgers and fries. Just know that the male waiter is grumpy and won't provide you with anything but bare minimum service. I still can't figure out why he got so irritated when we ordered the potstickers. HAHAHA geez.

    (3)
  • Jesse K.

The food is O.K., judging from a Chinese's point of view. However, I want to warn you that in our case, a three-people party, they added tip into our check without even saying a word, or indicating it anywhere ( we only know it when we asked for a check break-down since we thought the check total was higher than it should be).3 star for it's food, but 2 star for its service and dishonesty.

    (2)
  • Don Y.

did takeout, probably the worst chinese food i've had in 10+ years. wife and i are chinese ancestry so the staff helpfully steered us to the less westernized dishes- but the cooking was bland. worst mistake was ordering the potstickers, which had a musty flavor, something like what you'd get if you had a pack of frozen dumplings in an open bag in your freezer for 5 years. if i'm ever in west yellowstone again, i'll be sure to steer clear.

    (1)
  • Ed R.

This may be the healthiest meal we've had on the trip. Oh, it's nice to taste vegetables again. This place is very popular, but the service will still be lightening quick. The waiters are really on the ball. The food is pretty alright.

    (3)
  • Fangwei L.

truly horrible. food is cold and under cook. very pricy considering the portion of food. and they include tip in bill without telling you. worst experience ever.

    (1)
  • Sylvia L.

Poor cooking!!!! As a Chinese, can't imagine how could a restaurant make dishes tasted like this!!! Is it real that salt is cheap here?! Everything is extremely salty!!! And the price is too high for this kind of food. If u really really really want to have some Chinese cuisine, keep it until u leave this place.

    (1)
  • Yang X.

We ordered bison and venison but they were too small and not tasty. It's not easy to open a Chinese restaurant in this city, but the price was too high.

    (2)
  • Jia L.

Why there is no zero star or negative star of this restaurant?! 居然没有零星评分或者负评分!The waitress is even yelling at us!"If you don't like us? Then get away from here!" 服务生原话:"你们吃不吃!不吃走人!我们不缺客人!" That's ridiculous! 我们点了香干肉丝,香干是酸的,要求换菜,换了半小时没上菜,最后的消费好意思直接按照最高一档强制加在单上!The dish we ordered tasted like rubbish so we requested to change and that cost us half a hour to wait for another dish. The tips was added directly to the order without our permission. 简直是差评中的差评!The most awful dining experience EVER!

    (1)
  • Zhi Z.

The price is too expensive. The waiter is rapid.Every meal are too small.the tasty isn't very good.

    (1)
  • Michael L.

Because there is no zero! So I have to give them a star. And it's the most expensive food I taste in the U.S.. Otherwise it's also the worst taste in the U.S. !

    (1)
  • Yifang Y.

it is really expensive but the dishs are not fresh. We ordered a tofu, which is really sour. And they count the tips as service fee in the bill. We can not change the tips.

    (1)
  • Liujia W.

Poor service with terrible food. Not worth the price. We should notice this earlier, but we didn't have wifi signal in the Yellowstone area. Never go to this place again.

    (1)
  • Feb S.

Taste: 2 Location: 3 Cleanliness: 3.5 Ambience: 2.5 Value: 2 Service: 3 * Out of a 5-point scale The food is overpriced and the taste are quite bland. However the Elk Meat in a hotplate that we got was actually pretty good and tasty but it's about $35. We got the Ma Po Tofu which was bland and Seafood Stir Fry which was also alright. For 3 dishes, we spent almost $100.

    (2)
  • Sean W.

Do not eat here, Honestly. We have reason to believe that the China Town Restaurant is the worst one in West Yellowstone, MT. The food is terrible, the staff is unfriendly and the owner here is rude ! We really can't believe their system!

    (1)
  • Bethany C.

We got the special for two , which is 16.50 per person. Let me just say the portions were small. The taste was alright but it definitely wasn't worth the 38 dollars we paid. By the way they add on a gratuity to your bill automatically.

    (2)
  • Meng C.

they fraud customers, charge 2 dollars for white rice each person with the reason chinese restaurants in CA do so. the dishes were not good enough compare to the price, also charge tips themselves... i got diarrhea next morning i went there...

    (1)
  • Sandra O.

Before we went there we were a bit hesitant as the reviews we found here on Yelp was quite negative. It turned out to be the best Chinese restaurant we've tried while visiting Yellow Stone. Now bare in mind that my friends and I haven spent quite some years here in the U.S. and to compared with the average Chinese restaurant here you'd say they are pretty decent. Do NOT apply your standard back in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong please, that'd only twisted your expectation too a wrongly high level. Yes the front desk service is a bit cocky and it is very crowded but as long as the taste is good enough, I won't complain too much.

    (4)
  • May Y.

Believe it or not, my friends and I surprisingly had an authentic Chinese meal at Chinatown Restaurant. I had crunchy spring rolls with recognizable vegetables and a dish of hot spinach spiced with garlic. These dishes are so simple yet hard to be executed well. I cannot tell you the number of times that I had spring rolls that are either extremely oily or had stuffing that I cannot recognize. Most Chinese restaurants I have been at the States often serve cold or plain vegetables. According to my friends who shared a dish of stir fried bison, the favor of the meat was enhanced by the garlic, oyster sauce and scallion in addition to the traditional soy sauce. Without doubt, dining at Chinatown Restaurant after a long hike was one of the best decisions my friends and I made during my trip to Yellowstone.

  • Tom C.

my advice --- avoid it! please! please! how many chinese restaurants have i been to ? zillions. I have ben in yellowstone for several days. This horrible restaurant is absolutely the worst of worst restaurants ever. It charges you 8 bucks for congee. It serves lots of chinese tour groups and apparently they don't have the habit of tipping. so the waitress will bring you the check : cash + tax + 15% tip and the food is extremely expensive and disgusting. i ordered seafood. guess what i did get? the chef cooked the mean within 2 minutes and the dish was still pretty cold. guess what? they microwaved some leftover rice and seafood for me. the amount of food was not even enough for a 10 year old kid. i paid 22 dollars including tax and tip. nightmare! absolutely nightmare! avoid it! trust me!

    (1)
  • Jack S.

Worst Food ever. We ordered fish, beef and cabbage. The fish tasted terrible! It's not fresh either. The cooked beef looks like at least a few days old.

    (1)
  • Rui F.

The waiter added 15% tip in the tax item. I didn't realize that I tipped him twice until I left the place. The worst cheater!!!

    (1)
  • Luffy F.

food is not too bad. However, the waiter add ed one dollar service fee and 15% tips in the bill without telling us. That's rediculous.

    (1)
  • Nancy S.

it was a disaster. I can say responsibly that service there is the most terrible one in US. Waiters basically want to get rid of you as quickly as possible, and get back to their conversation. Also be sure not to make any mistake during order process, because waiters will make fun of you afterwards. The most noisy people in that restaurant was these waiters. Restroom was also a mess. Worst in US. I wouldn't describe it. The food was fine, like any other Chinese restaurants in West Yellowstone.

    (1)
  • Harry Z.

worst Chinese food I ever had. Even 1000 times worse than Panda Express. And panda is my bottom line. So u know what to expect. Luckily there's a DQ next door so I can get some ice cream to refresh my mouth

    (1)
  • Vicki D.

The food was average at best. We ordered the beef Lo Mein which is far from what Lo Mein should be.. It was greasy, noodles were soggy. and staff were unfriendly too. I think this place got away with mediocre food and services because of the fact there is limited number of Chinese restaurants in this area. I wouldn't recommend it but if you crave for Chinese and given the lack of options here, this place is not the worst you can do... Just don't expect too much from it.

    (2)
  • Claire Z.

I will never come to the restaurant again. Yes. I mean it. The front desk lady's attitude is really bad. Not just what she said, also she showed us a pissed-off face when we inquire about the time needed to wait. She told everyone 5-10 min wait and then another 5-10 min. Really bad experience Another thing is the dish Elk with mushroom which costs 35 bucks. First it's small amount; that's fine if it tastes good. But it's NOT !!! Does not worth it at all. We had another dish "shrimp with spinach". Well, you can still see the black intestine on the shrimp and it tastes DEADLY. Not to mention the service: no one come with a tea or water at first and they charge 10 bucks of tips directly on the bill. I guess they knew no one would give tips since they don't actually have the service!!! Usually I don't write bad review. But the restaurant really sucks!!!

    (1)
  • annie h.

Saw a good review from a Chinese, thought it might worth a try. Turned out to be the worst place ever. Had an order paper in the noodle, and the beef stinks! Food is not fresh at all. Tourists don't go!!

    (1)
  • Naiyi C.

I understand it's not easy to get fresh vegetable here, but what they serve still makes me felt not acceptable. Read comments before you go in. They are all true.

    (2)
  • Sichen H.

No service at all!!!!!!!! But we are forced to pay the 15% tips 全是旅游团,完全没服务!还强收15%小费!爱吃中餐另找附近的店吧

    (1)
  • Saurabh R.

We asked for schezwan chicken after eating halfway through found beef chunks.... Beware. The only one star I am giving is for the fired rice but i think it had a lot of msg

    (1)
  • Elsa L.

Better than we thought! It's a good Chinese restaurant. Chinese could ask for special menu.

    (3)
  • Felicia Z.

The worst Chinese food I have ever had and the worst service I have ever gotten in the U.S. The waiter kept forgetting what we have ordered and the food was not even cooked inside! They cleaned the table without asking us and took the unfinished dishes away because they wanted to serve another group. We are customers who came for food and service not someone you can ask us to go at any time. They also calculated wrong and charged more then we ordered! So make sure you check your bills before paying! They can get extra money from that. The dishes were small and so so, or below average. So disappointed anyway. I will let all my friends come to Yellowstone to stay away from there.

    (1)
  • Jay C.

Bar none the worst Chinese food I've had in my life. To top that off, their price is ridiculous as well. Came out to $80 for 4 people with tip (mediocre to poor service). This place is a 1 star just for the quality of the food; but with the expensive price, I want to give it a 0 star if that was an option.

    (1)
  • Jenny W.

Well, they are a "really really good" chinaese restaurant, i am living in new york for couple year, and this is my first time to visit this place, and we choose to eat here, but their service are horrible, we are the first table to place our order, but we get our food all most the last one, and they give me wrong dishes...what? Wait for long time and get wrong stuff? And also, they automatic put the tips on your bill, will they wanna me pay 15ï¼…tips for wrong food and bad service,no....i will never come back and also never recommand any ppl to eat here, so bad.....

    (1)
  • Chao W.

This is the worst Chinese food and service that I have ever had! 15% service fee is mandatory added to the bill which they don't deserve at all. Food is nasty and doesn't taste good. If you want something ruining your day, go to Chinatown restaurant.

    (1)
  • Xing Eva G.

Great food! And the food comes very fast. It's really amazing to have such good chinese food near yellow stone. You can't miss it.

    (5)
  • Tristan Y.

food is terrible, it's not Chinese food at all. Staffs there are very rude. They sell buffalo meat and deer meat to Chinese ppl. The environment is noisy.

    (1)
  • Amber N.

Shockingly bad food, rude waiters. The food was very over priced for what it was. I think the waiters are confused between being attentive and outright pushy. We just sat down and the waiter came ready to take orders. We asked for more time and the waiters were lurking right next to the table waiting, very uncomfortable. We ordered some dished including the bean sprouts dish. We asked not to have carrots in the dish, but everything else. When the food came out, the steam rice was over water that it was mushy. The bean sprouts has nothing else. It supposed to have mushroom and bamboo, but they weren't there. We think the waiter wrote down wrong or the cook was confused. Anyway, even if the mushroom and bamboo were added, the dish was probably still a disaster. No favors, no taste, just bland and un-appetite. Btw, the bathroom has water run down 'soap' that has no soap. Isn't this a health violation? We won't come back for sure.

    (1)
  • Syazana H.

The food taste pretty bland and they could be overpriced too. I tried seafood sizzling platter which was one of the chef's specials. Thought that it will be really good considering that the price was nearly 20 dollars, but I was quite disappointed because the sauce felt like it needed more taste. Quite alright if you couldn't find elsewhere to eat, the town has not got a lot of good places to eat anyway.

    (2)
  • Jerry C.

Be alert, you might double paid the tip there. They secretly put the tip in the check without notification. If you never actually read the ticket they give to you, you might pay the tip twice. Also, it does not matter what is the quality of service, they charge you tip anyway. 他們會偷加小費到帳單。不只強迫你付小費,而你一不小心,也可能付了兩次小費。

    (1)
  • Nim T.

No "0" stars?! I would want to use colorful 4-letter words but I'd rather keep it professional. Let me list my "issues" based on a recent encounter with this place: 1. Staff were so busy, they forgot about manners and etiquette. 2. Charging for tea? What Chinese restaurant does that?! 3. Bad service. Apparently chopsticks were only offered to people who spoke Chinese. 4. They involuntarily charge 18% gratuity... and still charge tax (5). I thought they didn't charge tax in Montana?! 6. Food was wasn't disgusting but it definitely wasn't good. On the taste level, it's probably the WORST tasting Chinese food I've ever had. For a group of people who were hungry, to know that the food sucks is a very bad sign. 7. Price- Imagine paying the price of a Lexus and only getting shopping cart. Yes, I know it's a bit exaggerated but that's how it felt like. Do yourself a favor and go to McDonald's down the street.

    (1)
  • Will T.

One word: disgusting. Plates are cold. Felt like eating leftovers. The soup tasted like salty warm water. Vegetables were not fresh. Terrible service. Ugly decoration. Can it get any worse? Yes it can, the restrom was just absolutley ghastly. The only exception was the rice since it is hard to make rice in the mountains.

    (1)
  • Leon H.

I think food served here was impressive, and the servers were nice and friendly. I would definitely go back again.

    (5)
  • mengzi w.

I am debating whether this beats McDonald, probably KFC is better. Yes this is Yellowstone, and for Chinese, that is why it gets 2 star. Price is, well Yellowstone, taste is not bad, though portion small, I think the Elk is just beef (I had Elk before). And the 1 hour wait!

    (2)
  • Raizel G.

I ate here with a couple other people when we stayed in West Yellowstone. It was getting late, and we ended up choosing this place because it was still open and there were other people eating inside. The staff was not rude to us and were actually pretty attentive even though they were pretty busy that night. We got the Family Dinner for 3 people which comes with a cup of soup, an eggroll, a fried wonton, and a main entree for each person. We got Green Pepper Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Kung Pao Chicken for our entrees. The food was alright. The soup, eggrolls, and fired wontons were pretty dissappointing. The entrees were not terrible, but they were different than what we expected. Where I'm from, there are a lot of authentic Chinese places to eat. For where we were, it wasn't bad, but if your're used to great Chinese food, don't get your hopes up. There was plenty of food, and we couldn't finish all of it (even though we tried)! I don't think I'd come here again just because I'd want to try something new if I ever went back to Yellowstone. But if you're set on having Chinese food then I'd say to give it a shot.

    (3)
  • Shawn E.

I ordered from the exclusive Chinese menu, and not the standard house menu. Elk with mushrooms, Stir fry chicken tomato, and sechuan fish soup were all excellent. Place was packed with chinese diners, and I asked some how they liked their meal. Everyone was good or thumbs up - so their experience seemed to mirror mine. Adding this to my list of must dine again, on return in the future!

    (4)
  • David L.

A hole-in-the-wall ghetto style Chinese restaurant inside Yellowstone National Park. I didn't want to go here, but there were no other non-fast food restaurants nearby. They seriously need to do some renovations. Tables were sticky and seats were dirty. The interior was very 1970's, including the tables and chairs. The food quality was decent. Ingredients did look and taste fresh. I've seen worse Chinese food at food courts. The portion sizes were small. There was less than a cupful of ingredients for each dish! When I spoke about the small portion sizes, they gave us two free dishes.

    (2)
  • Philip J.

This place shouldn't even operate as a restaurant. The food is disgusting, and the interior is dirty. Listen to me and save yourself the hard earned cash. Don't come here. BTW, this place charges $1.50 for tea!!! Really????

    (1)
  • Stephanie K.

Interesting that the reviews are so negative. We had a positive experience. Food was fine, after all, this IS West Yellowstone! There were tons of Asians here. We had hot and sour soup, Mongolia beef, spicy chicken, fried rice. Plenty of food. Sure, a bit pricey, but this is a tourist town.

    (3)
  • Congcong H.

I hate this place to death! I ate here only because my parents preferred Chinese food. My father's beer took forever! The waitress is evil and mean and cold. I really don't want to tip her. Never ever eat here!!!

    (1)
  • Peony C.

Overall, this restaurant's dishes are too small and too salty. The dishes are not worth the price. The restaurant was very crowded and a little dirty. But it was great that we found a Chinese restaurant near our hotel. If you don't expect too much, this restaurant is good for traveling.

    (2)
  • Isa P.

As a Chinese I can't bear the food and bad service here. It is the only restaurant I ever known who calculate tips for you and let yourself pack food!

    (1)
  • Angela C.

I stand by my review. What do you expect out in Montana?? It's not Chinatown USA, now is it? For being in Montana, it WAS better than expected, and I had bad Chinese food going into Montana... in Idaho. This was entirely relative.

    (4)
  • Max N.

okay food if not awful. they charge tea without mentioning (no chinese restaurant does that). the most ridiculous thing is that they will put in 15 to 18 percent as tip on the bill AUTOMATICALLY. it should be called robbing. We had only 3 people and I've never been charged tip this way. They also put in tax, which should be 0 in Montana! Worst Chinese restaurant experience ever. There is no 0 star?

    (1)
  • Dolphin S.

We ate at Red Lotus the night before and then decided to do this take out, which is why I am giving it 3 stars. The food was good, portions were good. I order the meat stirfrys without the veggies for an extra dollar, because of the bad experience at Red Lotus. Recommend take out here! Beware of pre-added tips!

    (3)
  • Jia H.

This is the WORST chinese restaurant I have ever seen. Oh, my god! As a Chinese American, I feel that the restaurant lose all Chinese faces. It is only Chinese restaurant in West Yellowstone. Even though the restaurant's food taste like dog food, it still has some customers. The seafood vegetable soup we orderd is uncooked and not hot at all. The vegatable in the soup is raw. All dishes are very small just like kids' meals. The restaurant is small and dirty. The service is bad, too. Compare to other Chinese restaurant, the food is more expensive.

    (1)
  • Parminder Nayyar C.

They had some pure vegetarian options as our friends were veggie. Veggie food was okay. We ordered hunan chicken and schezwan chicken. Hunan was tasteless, schezwan was fine. Given the options its not a bad restaurant.

    (2)
  • Carol L.

Worst Chinese Food I ever had in America for 7 years. The Chinese Food here is not authentic , it is totally Americanized. The food is pricey. We ordered two noodles, one fried rice, and a dish of meat, the price is already over 40 dollars. What I don't like the most is their trick on the bill. Although there is 0% sales tax in Montana, the restaurant charges 18% gratuity on our bill, and label it as "TAX" !!!!! ( we didn't realized this fact until I read reviews on Yelp), we paid additional 12% tip on the bill-----thus, we ended up paying 30% tip on OK service, below average food. I don't mind paying high price for the food as I really appreciate to be able to eat Chinese Food here. I am just sick of them cheating tips! I will never go to this place again.

    (1)
  • Natalie M.

Terrible food. West Yellowstone has no good chinese food at all.

    (1)
  • Amy L.

One of the three Chinese restaurants near West entrance. I won't say the food is amazing but I do like the flavor, not too salty. Their 本地鳟鱼 is 清真 flavor, fresh and tasty. My family really loves it! It's a little bit pricey though, $45 in October. The service is good too! Although they were super busy, they tried to get everyone's need! We had a satisfying experience here!

    (4)
  • Levn Z.

I won't say the food is very bad~ but my cooking is definitely better than its food and it is ridiculously expensive~ at the end they will automatically add 15% tip to the bill. The beef noodle soup is just couple stir fried beef and soy source soup. Really tasteless... DONT GO!!!
